Product Review - The Padbury Colic Mix
Hold the abuse. I swear mentioning this as an option REALLY invokes some interesting debates. I am always up for a healthy discussion, so please let me know your thoughts…
I want to say ‘a quick google as a struggling colic-exhausted parent will lead you to the Padbury Colic Mix’ - but for me, it took a good couple of months before someone mentioned the Padbury mix as an option to consider for my little man.
Basically it is a mix of antispasmodics, so it helps bubba’s gut relax and find it easier to release the gas.
After my initial look into this, i thought OH MY GOD I MIGHT HAVE FOUND OUR ANSWER.
But, like all things, i found that as i started googling deeper, i came across lots of articles saying ‘ITS NOT GOOD FOR THEM’ which of course gave me the all familiar feeling of guilt.
I am sure if you are reading this article you may have found yourself in a similar position, so here is a more recent and honest review of what i thought of the Padbury Colic Mix for my little man.
Spoiler alert… it sort of worked… and it was definitely worth trying.
The argument against
Here is one of many ‘anti-padbury-mix’ articles that you may have come across.
The author, Philippa, goes into detail about the active ingredients in the mix and outlines some of the potential side effects of these. It is certainly worth a read - although, full disclaimer, it absolutely triggers parent-guilt. For this reason, i will not go into the details in this article. You can click on the link and have a read if you would like to.
From what i could tell, the main reason people say it is bad for babies is because it is a ‘medication’, it is not a ‘natural’ product. And everything has side effects, of course. So as long as this sits comfortably with you (and your doctor) then it is still an option you can keep on your list.
For me… it was worth trying.
My Decision
I tried many of the ‘natural’ options such as chamomile, massages, bicycle legs, the Dr Browns bottles, burping during and after feeds, timed feeds, feeding on demand, cutting out dairy etc etc. But nothing really worked.
So after speaking with my doctor to get her take on the Padbury mix (she had no problems with it and definitely was supportive of giving it a go) I decided that yes, it was worth a shot.
I drove out to Padbury, a good 45 minutes from where i live, with a screaming baby in the car (and with my Mum for moral support), so i could purchase the Colic Mix. The pharmacy offers over the phone consultations and postage, however i was desperate and didnt want to wait.
Mum waited in the car, with ‘Hey Sensory Bear’ playing on YouTube to distract Tate’s screaming as much as possible. When i arrived, the staff were lovely and welcoming. I spoke with Steve who is the pharmacist who developed the Colic Mix, and he made me feel so heard and understood - i was speaking to someone who genuinely understood the trauma i was experiencing watching my baby suffer. And after being dismissed by 99% of other people, I seriously could have cried and hugged him. It took maybe 20-30 mins for the consultation and for the bottle and ‘script’ to be made up. Steve even gave me his mobile number to text if i had any questions or concerns. The support was amazing.
I started the mix as soon as i got home.
The Verdict
Did it work?? Well, yeah it kind of did… Was it worth trying? ABSOLUTELY.
I have to admit, i did notice a good response to the mix pretty quickly in my little man. I definitely found it helped more than anything else i had tried. It definitely didn't ‘stop’ the screaming completely, and i did have to make sure i kept up with the dosage, but it definitely gave some longer stretches of rest for the poor little dude.
After a few days of using it i did notice that his bowels had slowed a little and was getting a bit of discomfort from that, so then it was onto the next problem of trying to work through that. Steve was very helpful through text messaging and gave advice on his symptoms, what might be happening and adjusting the dose.
It gave my little man some peace and some comfort, even temporarily. Also, Steve was amazingly supportive and is one of the few professionals actually willing to listen and help when it comes to our colicky little ones.
My advice… speak with your doctor, and if you are comfortable TRY IT. Give the pharmacy a call and suss it out.
